TEACHING EXPERIENCE
- Winona State University, Winona, MN: Assistant Professor, 1996 to present. Responsible for teaching a wide variety of undergraduate mathematics courses. Heavily involved in curriculum reform of the Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and Differential Equations courses. Presently involved in the development of the Math for Earth & Life Sciences course sequence. Active in seminars concerning mathematics, pedagogy, and online teaching.
- Widener University, Chester, PA: Math Center Tutor, Fall 1995. Provided walk-in tutoring services to students in College Algebra, Calculus, Differential Equations, Statistics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, and graduate level Real Analysis.
- University of Delaware, Newark, DE:
- Maple Program Instructor, Fall 1995. Developed and taught a short course on the use of Maple on SPARC Workstations for transfer students in Differential Equations.
- Math Insurance Program Coordinator, Summer 1995. Co-coordinator Summer 1993. Tutor 19901992. Working with Dr. Michael Vaughn of the R.I.S.E. scholarship program, coordinated a summer induction program for minorities in engineering. Duties included curriculum development, academic advisement, Trigonometry and Calculus instruction, tutoring, and computer instruction in Derive and Maple symbolic manipulation packages on SPARC Workstations.
- Instructor, Winter 1995. Taught Differential Equations for engineers in a SPARC Workstation classroom using Maple. Well-received instruction emphasized mathematical modeling and qualitative interpretation of theoretical and numerical solutions to both initial value and boundary value problems. Students assessed through exams and graded cooperative effort projects involving the use of Maple.
- Instructor, 19901992. Successfully (according to student and faculty feedback) taught Calculus I & III for mathematics and engineering majors, and Finite Mathematics for business majors. Teaching Assistant, 19891995 intermittently. Responsible for running constructive, productive recitation sessions and computer labs employing Derive, Omnifarious Plotter, and programs written in Basic.
- Bethlehem Area School District, Bethlehem, PA:
- Secondary Mathematics Teacher, 19931994 at Freedom High School. Taught wide variety of students from freshmen and sophomores in Algebra I to Honors Pre-Calculus to a terminal course in advanced mathematics for seniors. Pioneered the implementation of TI-81 and TI-82 into the mathematics curriculum at all levels. Elicited truly outstanding work from students by combining cooperative learning with a hands-on discovery and problem solving approach and with mathematical modeling of real world phenomena. Completed professional development necessary to pursue permanent Pennsylvania Certification.
- Student Teacher, Spring 1989 at Nitschmann Middle and Freedom High School. MathCounts Coach, Fall 1988 at East Hills Middle School. Successfully prepared eight top seventh grade students for regional level MathCounts competition.
- Moravian College, Bethlehem, PA: Adjunct Faculty, Summer 1991. Taught Calculus I for non-mathematics majors and remedial Algebra using, almost exclusively, a concept induction approach.
- Other Employment:
- Resident Geometer, Summer 1989. Worked with the Visual Geometry Project under a joint NSF grant to Moravian and Swarthmore. Project goal is to reintroduce solid geometry into the high school curriculum. I conducted research on the technical and historical aspects of the Platonic Solids and then created many hands-on activities for the Platonic Solids Workbook. The VGP materials, including the final version of the Platonic Solids Workbook, have been published by the Key Curriculum Press.
