Preliminary Schedule for the 2008 Northern Great Plains Experience Orientation Meeting – 12 hours: On April 12 and 13 (Saturday and Sunday), we hold an orientation workshop to discuss academic assignments, gear requirements, skills necessary for camping, etc. Students should bring the tents they expect to use. May Activities – variable hours/days After completing their finals, students have until May 27th to complete the following assignments: Read Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, by Dee Brown Read Cheyenne Autumn, by Mari Sandoz Read The Sacred Pipe: Black Elk’s Account of the Seven Rites of the Oglala Sioux, by Joseph Epes Brown Draft, get feedback, and revise a three-page paper describing experiences and expectations for Dr. Brault Draft, get feedback, and revise a three-page paper describing research goals for Dr. Reidy. Classroom Meetings – 25 hours Tuesday, May 27 and Wednesday, May 28: full-day sessions in the classroom, probably 9am-3pm. Thursday, May 29: class from 9-noon, then break for lunch, then gather at Dr. Reidy's house for an overnight campout. Practice setting up camp, cooking a meal, etc. Friday, May 30: wake up at Dr. Reidy's house, practice cooking, breaking camp, and packing up, then head home by mid-morning. Field Experience – 14 days Sunday, June 1: leave Winona early morning Friday, June 14: return to Winona late afternoon. Post Field Experience – 7 hours Monday, June 16: debriefing, 9-noon Monday, June 16: Rendezvous at Dr. Brault’s house We will be scheduling approximately four more sessions to meet with students as they write their papers. Times and dates will depend on participants' schedules. Participants will meet with conference partners and Dr. Brault to draft and revise their essays for English 210.
