Oil Drop Model of Protein Structure (Lysozyme)
Shown to the right is the protein lysozyme. The hydrophobic amino acid residues are colored blue and the hydrophilic amino acid residues are colored red. This is a "slab" view produced by cutting the protein down the middle and displaying only the interior. Each view of the animation is obtained by rotating the protein 10 degrees before cutting and displaying the "slab view." There are a total of 36 individual views completing one full turn of 360 degrees. Note that the interior of the protein is rich in hydrophobic residues while the exterior of the protein has most of the hydrophilic amino acid residues.
