Pharmacy School Information

So you're thinking about Pharmacy School....

Winona State University can help get you there!

A career in the pharmaceutical sciences can be a rewarding and challenging experience.   Areas of interest include pharmacy and research areas such as pharmaceutics, pharmacology, and pharmacognosy.  Any of these areas can lead you to an inspiring career working with other scientists in the development and use of drugs.

Pharmacy-  A degree in pharmacy is a professional degree.  It can be obtained one of two ways:  1) applying to graduate school after earning the credits and requirements (2-3 years) for application and 2) applying to graduate school after earning a bachelor of science degree.  The second way is more versatile as it affords you a degree to fall back on in case you find that pharmacy school is not for you.  Preparation for the program can be completed at Winona State University.

Most programs are four years in length.  To find out which schools offer pharmacy programs, click here.  Application requirements include taking the PCAT (Pharmacy College Admission Test).    Information for taking the PCAT can be found  here.  Pre-requisites for pharmacy school vary.  To find the which courses are required for the program you are interested in, you will need to contact the school of interest or contact one of the pre-pharmacy advisors (Dr. Nalli and Dr. Hein).  The AACP also lists the requirements of most schools.  Some of the most popular programs for Winona State students are listed below.

University of Minnesota                            University of Iowa

University of Wisconsin                            University of South Dakota

Research- A career in the pharmaceutical sciences does not need to be limited to becoming a pharmacist.  Perhaps you would you like to help discover drugs?  Or develop them?  Or determine their efficacy?  Groundbreaking medications and treatments are found by conducting research.  Endeavors such as these are best met by attending graduate school in a pharmaceutical research area.  If you think you might like to investigate these fields, please talk to Dr. Nalli or Dr. Hein.
