Director of University Communication (1989 to 2006)

• Directed the university's integrated marketing and communication plan with responsibility for $150,000+ annual advertising campaign including creative concepts, production, media selection and placement of print, broadcast, electronic and direct advertising materials

• Chaired the WSU Marketing Task Force, an advisory group that develops and oversees the university advertising campaign

• Provided consultation and assistance to all university departments on design and preparation of advertising, flyers, brochures, newsletters, news releases, publicity materials, etc.

• Participated on the editorial board for Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Chancellor's office, providing consultation and content for publications, public relations and advertising

• Provided communication expertise and consultation to the University president and cabinet with regard to policy, public relations and media relations, and assistance with written communication with a variety of constituencies including government officials, business leaders, community organizations, donors, alumni, and faculty, staff and students

• Consulted with national independent higher education marketing and research consultants to enhance the image of the university

• Developed departmental priorities, equipment and materials purchasing and employee supervision within assigned budget structures

• Served as a creative (design and writing) advisor for major university publications including projects for Admissions, The President's Office and colleges and departments

• Directed all aspects (planning, design, layout, and publication) in the creative process for the major publications of the Admissions office, 1991-1992

• Directed the annual Alumni and Parent Phonathon to raise funds for the WSU Foundation Annual Fund 1991-1992 (The drive beat all previous records and raised more than $150,000)

  1. Supervised the Public Information and Photo Services divisions:
    - write, edit and publish news releases, feature stories, weekly staff/faculty newsletters, quarterly alumni newspapers and annual reports
    - provide liaison services between the university and local, regional and national media outlets including specialty trade-related publications
    - host news conferences related to university programs, events or guest speakers
    - provide photographic services to the university community including digital, black and white and color print and slide processing and printing, and operation of a photo studio, dark room
    and digital photo suite

• Provided creative advertising/promotions consultation, copywriting and voice talent to local and regional radio stations and commercial clients

• Served as creative consultant to Winona Radio (KAGE, KWNO, KHME) from 1989 to 1996 researching, writing and producing commercial advertising for “inactive” clients, consistently converting more than 50 percent to active advertisers, and developing promotions, contests and advertising materials for the Winona stations and sister stations across Minnesota

• Served as advertising coordinator for Mingles nightclub in Winona, writing, producing and placing all creative advertising and promotions, including coop work with major bottlers and distillers
