Chemistry 475 - Chemistry Seminar
Spring
Semester 2008
Poster presentation guidelines
Topics: Research topics, such as your current
or previous Individual Problems work or results from other research experiences you may
have had, are very appropriate and are encouraged. The topic must be chosen and submitted
to me by February 22. Please talk to me in advance about possible topics or ask me to suggest
some if you don't have any ideas.
Abstract:
A title and abstract prepared according to the same guidelines used for ACS
meetings will be due one week prior to your presentation date. The title/abstract will be
distributed to all Chemistry faculty and posted on the course web site.
An effort should be made to make your poster look interesting and inviting.
Poster:
- The poster presentation is limited to an area of 6 feet wide by 4 feet tall. Posters
should be planned so that they make use of most of the available space.
- The poster should include at least one graph and at least one table and at least one
figure or scheme with chemical structures. It is strongly preferred that the
poster be done as a large format printout rather than as individual
placards.
- The poster should be easily legible at a distance of 4 feet.
- The poster should follow a logical organization scheme and be laid out
clearly in terms of the sequence in which it should be read.
- You are expected to stand with your poster during the entire poster session class period
and present and/or answer questions from faculty and other students on it.
All students
in the class not presenting a poster during the same period are also expected to visit
their classmates' posters and ask some questions.
- Grading of posters: The professor will consider your fellow students'
critiques in arriving at a grade for your poster. Attractiveness,
legibility, organization, appropriateness of content level, adherence to ACS
style guidelines.
Oral presentation of the poster:
- Length of presentation should be approximately 10 (±2) minutes.
- Grading of presentation: You will be graded both on the content of your
poster presentation and on your ability to present it clearly and
enthusiastically. You need to sound like you know what you are talking about
it so do not neglect studying the content.
