Chemistry 460 - Chemistry Research Proposal                                                                     Spring Semester 2010

Poster Presentations

Abstract:

A title and abstract prepared according to the same guidelines used for ACS meetings is due one week prior the poster session date. (Abstract Due Date = April 16) A print out of all abstracts will be distributed to all Chemistry faculty and posted on the course web site.

Poster:

  1. The poster is limited to an area of 6 feet wide by 4 feet tall. Posters should be planned so that they make use of most of the available space. (The printers available on campus can accomodate paper no wider than 42", so effectively your poster can be no more than 6 ft x 42 in.)
  2. The poster should include at least one figure, scheme, or graph.
  3. It is strongly preferred that the poster be done as a large format printout rather than as individual placards.
  4. The poster should be easily legible at a distance of 3 feet.
  5. The poster should follow a logical organization scheme and be laid out clearly in terms of the sequence in which it should be read.
  6. See the ACS Poster guidelines (link below) and/or ACS Style Guide for more information on how to construct an effective poster.
  7. Avoid long paragraphs that people attending your poster will have to read through. Convert your text to bulleted lists of main points when possible.
  8. The Poster should be printed on or before Wednesday April 21. (If you wait until Thursday, there will be no chance to fix any embarassing mistakes that might become obvious from printing it.)
  9. In order to allow me to provide feedback that you can use, you should email me your poster by Monday April 19.

Presentation of the poster:

  1. Plan on making a five-minute oral presentation of your poster at the class poster session on April 23. The poster session will be held in the hallway of 3rd floor SLC.
  2. The poster session will be divided into two 25 minute periods. You will be assigned to be present at your poster during one of the two periods. During your assigned period you will be expected to present and/or answer questions from faculty and other students. During the period when you are not presenting you are expected to visit some of your classmates' posters and ask some questions.
  3. You are expected to have your poster up before the period begins (before 9:00 AM on April 23). You will receive notification of where exactly to put up your poster prior to April 22.
  4. Grading of posters: The poster will be graded on its attractiveness, legibility, organization, content, writing quality and adherence to ACS style guidelines.
