Accessing NMR data files:
1. From a PC,
click START, choose RUN enter \\STORE\CLASSES and click
OK
2. Enter your
username and password.
3. Scroll
down to the folder 20125000166M
4. The data you
need will be in the read-only subfolder. You should copy
all needed files to your machine for guaranteed easy
access later.
5. I recommend
that you create a shortcut to this folder by right
clicking on it and selecting "send to Desktop (create
shortcut)". Now you will have easy access to it in the
future.
Here is the procedure for getting to the class storage folder on a Mac.
- Open the "Finder"
- In the menu at the top of the screen click on "Go" and then "Connect to Server"
- Enter smb://store/classes
- Click Connect.
Installing Delta (software for processing NMR files):
- For
PCs running Windows XP. Go to start menu
and choose "Run". Use copy and paste to enter
\\appsrv1\apps\Installs\pc\Chemistry in the dialog box

Install_Delta_XP_ONLY file. Be sure to select
"Minimal" rather than "Typical" as the installation
option.
- For
PCs running Windows 7 or Vista: You must
be on campus connected via your wired network
connection. Make sure wireless is turned off during
the install. 2.) Go to Start => Run 3.) Enter:
\\appsrv1\apps\Installs\pc\Chemistry\Data\Delta\ and
click OK 4.) Copy the file DeltaInstaller_v4.3.6.exe
to your desktop. 5.) From the desktop, Right click on
the DeltaInstaller_4.3.6.exe file and select

entering the license key, which is available at the
course D2L site. Start the Delta program then select
"Installation" under the file menu and enter the license
key there.
3. Start up the
program and please make the following changes under
"Preferences" under the "File" menu:
- Under the
Printer tab set "Print JEOL Logo" to FALSE,
"Parameters Location" to BOTTOM, and "Plot Data
Thickness" and "Plot Integral Thickness" both to 0.10.
(Note: Delta is unusual in that it requires you to
keep the cursor in the box when you are changing
parameters.)
- Under the
Processors tab set "Process 1D: Show FID" to FALSE.
Click on "Save & Close"
Printing:
Preferred method is to set up Delta so you can print directly to a networked
printer:
-
Open up Delta and select <File>
<Preferences>
-
Choose <Options> then <Printer Configure>
- In
the "title" box, type \\printsrv1.winona.edu\slc386
(or at the end substitute the name of your favorite
network printer instead of slc386)
- In
the "Printer" scroll box select the printer you just
added and check that the "B&W" button is depressed
and the "posterize" button is not selected. Click
<save>.
-
Now go to the Printer/Plotter tab (3rd from left) and
click on <edit>. In the value box enter the full
address of the printer again exactly as it was entered
in step 3. Click <save and close> to exit out of
the preferences menu.
- To
print using a Mac note the following: When you
attempt to primpt Delta sends the print job to the
printer. However, for some reason the job is always
on hold. Just manually open the printer job by going
to System Preferences/Printer & Fax/ - Double
click on the printer that the print job has been
sent to. A new window with the name of the printer
will open and show the job sent to the printer.
Choose that job and hit " Resume". (You might be
asked for your user name and password.)
If you are having problems setting up a printer on Delta you can use the following work around (not tested on Mac).
- Get GPL Ghostscript 8.63 for Windows from http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/doc/GPL/gpl863.htm.
- Install the software on your laptop noting the directory to which it is installed.
- Open up Delta and go to Preferences off the File menu. Click on the Printer/Plotter tab, scroll down to Ghostscript and enter the full path to the gswin32.exe file. (On most computers the path that should be entered as C:\Program Files\gs\gs8.63\bin\gswin32.exe)
- Now you will be able to print directly to a pdf or jpg file. (The file will be saved to the D:\Data\delta\reports folder.)
- You can print the created file out to a network computer using other software such as Adobe Reader.
Below is a procedure for printing to a networked printer on a Mac without having to set up the printer in Delta. (Thanks to Kevin Bye for figuring most of this out.)
- Click “Plot Processed Data” button.
- Change “Printer” drop box to “File”.
- Click “File” button near bottom.
- Click “Ok” to set file name, or else change file path to where you want it saved. Default is a file Delta creates, the Delta log screen shows where it was written to if you need to find it.
- Click “Ok” and the file will be saved to the location given in Delta log screen.
- Open the saved file, and “Save As” a PDF file.
- Open the PDF in Adobe Reader and print it from there.
