Software:  Microsoft PowerPoint will be used extensively in the course. You will also need a molecule drawing program such as ChemDraw or ISIS/Draw.

Course Details:

  • Poster Presentation: The main requirement of the course is that you make a poster presentation on a chemistry topic of your choosing (preferably your undergraduate research).  The poster should be presented both to the Chemistry Department during one of our class periods and at the WSU Research Celebration Symposium in April. Because, there will not be enough time during the class periods for this, I will also need to meet with each student individually by appointment in order to hear each you present your poster orally,
  • Abstract: An abstract of your presentation written according to the same guidelines used for ACS National Meetings will also be required.
  • Other Assignments: There will be at least one additional homework assignment that will contribute to your grade in the course.
  • Off-Campus Presentations: You may be requested to present on your undergraduate research experience at an area high school. Extra credit will be awarded if you participate in such an activity.
  • Visiting Speakers: A number of oral presentations by visiting chemists have been scheduled for this class. (See seminar schedule) In addition, there will be numerous opportunities to attend chemistry seminars that do not conform to our class time or location (e.g., in-house seminars at times other than 11:00 on Friday and/or off-campus seminars).
  • Critiques: Students will critique one another using the seminar critique form. Forms will be collected by the professor and anonymous feedback will be distributed to the presenters.
  • Attendance: Attendance and participation during the scheduled class time is absolutely required. More than two unexcused absences will result in a lowering of the final grade by one letter grade. In addition, your attendance at at least one non-conforming chemistry seminar (see above and the class schedule sheet) is also required.
  • Grading: Since the principle goal of this course is to present a seminar the poster presentation to other members of the Chemistry Department and students, failure to present this poster will result in failure of the course.
  • Grade Calculation
