CME 480 Design Project II

Objectives

To learn how to:

design and fabricate tooling
use (composites) manufacturing processes and assembly/finishing methods to produce a functioning prototype
define applicable testing, perform the testing, and report the results
prepare a poster and give a team presentation
create and publish a website
work effectively in a project team environment

(In industry, it may be more cost effective to work closely with suppliers who possess a particular expertise not found within your organization rather than try and develop that expertise in-house. This course strives to provide a design experience representative of that found in industry. However, the educational setting also gives students the opportunity to use equipment and work with materials they may not have the chance to work directly with once they leave here. Therefore, it is expected students will take full advantage of this opportunity to get their hands dirty!)

Topics Covered

Developing manufacturing plans
Designing and manufacturing tools and fixtures
Developing a qualification test plan
Manufacturing, inspecting, and testing a qualification test unit
Manufacturing and inspecting a first article unit
Developing a website describing the design project
