Summary: fabricate panel, cut short beam (shear) strength test specimens (ASTM D 2344) from panel and test

Panel Requirements:

Materials:

West System 105 Epoxy Resin/206 Slow Hardener

7781 E-glass Fabric (the large roll on the separate support in Mfg Prep Lab)

Finished Panel Dimensions:

4.0 in. x 11.0 in. x 0.150 in.

thickness will be as fabricated (machining to achieve desired panel thickness is not permitted)

fabric is to be oriented such that the warp direction is along the 11.0 in. panel dimension

Specimen Dimensions (3 specimens to be tested, cut a total of 5 specimens):

1.5 in. length (along 11 in. panel dimension) x 0.30 in. width x thickness (approx. 0.150 in.)

Tooling and Fabrication Process:

heavy gauge steel sheet tooling

fabrication process is to be determined by each team (you are not permitted to use any of the presses, ovens (for postcuring), or the autoclave)

Evaluation Criteria:

Visual Inspection (25%)

Dimensional Inspection (25%)

Short Beam Strength, ASTM D 2344 (50%)
